What a horrible experience. Its not worth complaining to United directly if you don’t plan on flying them again. I am glad you have a blog to voice your complaints to the world.

As always, you are awesome. Be careful, though. I once wrote a complaint letter to United. Next thing I found out I was on the Federal Do Not Fly list and needed to get a “Redress” so I could fly again. Not sure what a blog post would do!

Isn’t it high time both New Zealand and Australia were forced to change their rules regarding companion animals being sent as cargo? Almost every airline in the USA allows pets under 20lbs to travel in the cabin and for good reason. Why is New Zealand so backward?

SO sorry to hear this – I teach this as a subject to training vet nurses here in New Zealand and I always tell them how many things can go wrong…sad to hear another example!
The animals are so vulnerable in the system – being left on tarmac to freeze or cook is just so unnecessary.

I will never fly with a pet unless he or she can fit under my seat. I will never pay a pet transport to drive my pets across country either, as I had a TERRIBLE experience with that. I will bite the bullet, buy a van and drive everyone across myself rather than put my beloved pets through what they experienced in the “care” of another supposedly pet-friendly company. I really feel for you as in your case, there was no other option. I’m so glad your pets came through none the worse for wear. Mine ended up with situational diabetes and other health problems as a direct result of their awful transport. These people don’t love animals; they are just a product to them, pure and simple.

I did receive a nice note from SFO indicating they take this very seriously, but unfortunately, this is under the purview of Air New Zealand. They have, however, followed up with ANZ to make sure they’re aware of the problem.

Had my dog and cat flown by Delta cargo from my hometown in the States to our new home in southern Germany. I hate those extortionists at Delta, but they did a good job getting the pets here in one piece. The worst part was that Delta forgot to notify German Ag authourities so we had to wait an hour for the vet to come out-process us.
